Why take the normal route when you can take a detour?

These are a few pictures from my last hiking trip. I thought they were interesting. That, and I wanted to add something else here and am running out of time. :)
Twenty six years ago some of the most "intelligent" doctors available came to the conclusion that I had sustained profound brain damage due to near-miss SIDS and that it would be terminal before I was a year old. Statistics and odds mean nothing to me. I graduated at the top of my class both in high school and from one of the most obnoxiously uppity universities. I have the best job ever as a preschool special education teacher. My path here has been anything but direct, and I am infamous for finding detours. My medical history comes in volumes and while I continue to ignore statistics and odds, I am proud of the fact that I am damaged goods. Perfection is highly overrated.
As a teacher, I take the privacy of my students very seriously. When I write about an event that involves a student, I never use their real names or any name that is close to their real name. I also frequently change identifying characteristics including ethnicity, gender, and physical characteristics to further enhance privacy. It is also rare that I refer to the same child by the same fictitious name twice, both for privacy reasons and because I am not that organized. At no time does the phrasing "damaged goods" refer to the children that I teach; it is a term that I use only for myself.
